Now I know I put it somewhere- Ah! There we are, the mission statement. Please have a seat whilst I read.
There are so many literature clubs that it almost seemed futile to open another one. There are clubs for poetry, prose, books and novels, publication, fansbut what about playwriting? It seems that playwriting is at an all-time low. This is why I started the club: to provide a club that reached beyond the normal literature club and into something that DA hasnt had thus far. Some of the greatest modern and contemporary playwrights started as poetry and prose authors. DA has many talented writers. Its a shame to see that many of them are being left out when it comes to playwriting. Many of them give up due to a lack of feedback. Many give up because they feel they cant advance or learn anything new about this form of writing. :devTheScript will provide what many lit clubs lack.
Some background on me, myself and I: I though that this would be necessary since a lot of you may be skeptical about joining or even checking it out. My name is Jarred ~
Synith . I am currently enrolled at a community college, working my way to an English major. I plan to teach high school. I have always love literature- especially theatre. I remember seeing Les Miserables with my parents when I was just 6 years old. At the time I had no idea what everything meant. But I did know something: acting looked really fun. In high school I was terribly shy. I enrolled in drama freshman year, later to drop because of shyness. During this time, I studied the gears of English. During my prior years of schooling I simply didnt care about it. I thought Id never need them so why study it? It took me two years to get though my awkward hurdle. I was then ready for the stage. I enrolled back into theater. I auditioned and acted in the 4 plays during the school year. During the year, I took a college class on acting. I finally got to work with a professor. The class lasted about 2 months but during the end of the class he had a long discussion about playwriting. It peaked my interest so much that I wrote a 4-act comedy. I submitted it in a local contest and won second prize. I was thrilled. It made me want to studyeverything having to do with theater. I read the works of Neil Simon, George Bernard Shaw, William Saroyan, Anton Chekov, Eugene O'Neill, Euripides, Shakespeare, and David Mamet. I learned, understood and applied the craft. This left many things at a standstill: my love for poetry. I came to DA in 2006 looking for somethinganything that would make my poetry and prose better. I knew I wanted to shape my poetry to add a 3rd dimension to my plays. I joined PoetryPlease and started. I learned a great deal from the members of PP. It split after a while, and broke off into several separate clubs of which I followed and continued to learn.
One of the most influential people I know on DA, one who commits her entire being to helping, shaping writers is *
salshep I have learned so much about writing just by having her read over a snip of something I wrote. Shell help you shape it into something epic if you have the time. For this same reason, Im starting TheScript. I want to encourage, shape and help new and experienced playwrights here on DA. Playwriting is left unheard of on DA becausefor some reason, plays look better on paper. I bite my thumb at this idealism and say, --Poetry looks good on paper, prose looks swell on paper as well yet we still have people posting poetry and prose on DA. Whats with that? This is why I plan to change this. There is the fear of someone ripping your play and selling, or entering it for a profit. Im sure everyone is aware of DAs copyright policybut text can still be ripped. This is why Im promoting the idea of uploading plays to DA in .PDF format.
