Hello and Welcome

Enter stage right!

:pencil: Hello and welcome to ~TheScript ! We’re glad you found your way here though the traffic.
This here is my humble abode. I surely hope you find your stay here pleasant and useful.
With that being said, please follow me.

Now I know I put it somewhere- Ah! There we are, the mission statement. Please have a seat whilst I read.

There are so many literature clubs that it almost seemed futile to open another one. There are clubs for poetry, prose, books and novels, publication, fans—but what about playwriting? It seems that playwriting is at an all-time low. This is why I started the club: to provide a club that reached beyond the normal literature club and into something that DA hasn’t had thus far. Some of the greatest modern and contemporary playwrights started as poetry and prose authors. DA has many talented writers. It’s a shame to see that many of them are being left out when it comes to playwriting. Many of them give up due to a lack of feedback. Many give up because they feel they can’t advance or learn anything new about this form of writing. :devTheScript will provide what many lit clubs lack.

:bulletblue: Some background on me, myself and I: I though that this would be necessary since a lot of you may be skeptical about joining or even checking it out. My name is Jarred ~Synith . I am currently enrolled at a community college, working my way to an English major. I plan to teach high school. I have always love literature- especially theatre. I remember seeing Les Miserables with my parents when I was just 6 years old. At the time I had no idea what everything meant. But I did know something: acting looked really fun. In high school I was terribly shy. I enrolled in drama freshman year, later to drop because of shyness. During this time, I studied the gears of English. During my prior years of schooling I simply didn’t care about it. I thought I’d never need them so why study it? It took me two years to get though my awkward hurdle. I was then ready for the stage. I enrolled back into theater. I auditioned and acted in the 4 plays during the school year. During the year, I took a college class on acting. I finally got to work with a professor. The class lasted about 2 months but during the end of the class he had a long discussion about playwriting. It peaked my interest so much that I wrote a 4-act comedy. I submitted it in a local contest and won second prize. I was thrilled. It made me want to study—everything having to do with theater. I read the works of Neil Simon, George Bernard Shaw, William Saroyan, Anton Chekov, Eugene O'Neill, Euripides, Shakespeare, and David Mamet. I learned, understood and applied the craft. This left many things at a standstill: my love for poetry. I came to DA in 2006 looking for something—anything that would make my poetry and prose better. I knew I wanted to shape my poetry to add a 3rd dimension to my plays. I joined PoetryPlease and started. I learned a great deal from the members of PP. It split after a while, and broke off into several separate clubs of which I followed and continued to learn.

One of the most influential people I know on DA, one who commits her entire being to helping, shaping writers is *salshep I have learned so much about writing just by having her read over a snip of something I wrote. She’ll help you shape it into something epic if you have the time. For this same reason, I’m starting TheScript. I want to encourage, shape and help new and experienced playwrights here on DA. Playwriting is left unheard of on DA because—for some reason, plays look better on paper. I bite my thumb at this idealism and say, “--Poetry looks good on paper, prose looks swell on paper as well yet we still have people posting poetry and prose on DA. What’s with that?” This is why I plan to change this. There is the fear of someone ripping your play and selling, or entering it for a profit. I’m sure everyone is aware of DA’s copyright policy—but text can still be ripped. This is why I’m promoting the idea of uploading plays to DA in .PDF format.

:bulletblue: Things I’m involved in: I’m heavily involved with *PoetryPlease #PoetryPlease and *TheFavoritesProject At PP, I manage the chat room and offer and suggest ideas that would benefit the club. I’m currently managing TFP. I’m also a member of #Underlit where I learn a great deal about writing. From time to time, I drop in #Dalit, and #DAmnlit. You can also find me in #iRPG.

:bulletblue: TS’s Staff: The only standing member of TheScript’s staff is me. ~Synith :resume: I’m currently accepting résumés by email only. If you’re interested in becoming a part of TheScript’s staff email me with your experience at: mesmeric_silence@hotmail.com I will not accept résumés that are sent by note.

:bulletblue: Joining TS: You are counted as a member once you give us a watch. Be sure to drop by the chat room, #TheScript as often as possible.

:bulletblue: Contests: Yes, we will have a lot of these. I’m seeing about a possible DD for playwrights who go far beyond the script.

I hope everyone here has fun and learns a great deal! :pencil:

Hello there

Just to point out in regard to scripts being DD’d and featured. There has been scripts in the past DD’d- the best examples being the work of ~barnabus who has some amazing script work. Other features include regular suggestions from *WordCount and =DailyDeviants, both of which I work for and try to ensure does happen. I have also made sure that I have featured some scripts in my ‘HotLits’ news articles. After all, I understand that playwriting does fall even more behind than even poetry and prose writing when it comes to deviantart and the only way to resolve the rut is to ensure they are shown with the rest.

I certainly agree with you about uploading scripts in PDF format, not only for the purpose of copyright protection, but also because it will aid the format, where html can make things complicated! I know from critique experience in scriptwriting that format can be one of the complications- especially because different styles demand it differently, and some find it complicated.

I have a lot of experience both in writing and in the theatre. If you’re looking for help in the New Year and such, feel free to drop me a note.

I'm quite familiar with the work of ~barnabus and he is one of the many reasons why I'm starting this. :WordCount: is amazing. I admire the dedication that have tp spreading fine literature around DA.

As far as the DD thing. Yes, I agree that some plays have been featured. But just like there are many forms of photography being featured (Abstract, Nude; etc) The same applies to writing. Prose and poetry have their features every other day. Scripts, however come once in a blue moon.
Hence why I want to start this club.

As far as your help I'd be more than glad to have you. If you're interested in a staff position, please email me your resume via email. If you're looking to drop by the club and critq people's work you're more than welcome.
One thing you can do, however is spread the news to every playwright you know on DA. I know of some-- but that doesn't encompass everyone. I'd like to reach out to as many playwrights as I can. If you could do that I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for you comment.
